Course Reduction/Cancellation?  Important Information!

The Union has been informed that Pace has reduced offering numerous courses or re-assigned existing courses to another Adjunct rather than re-assigning the course to the Adjunct that had been previously teaching the course.  Depending upon the specific factual situation, there may be a contract violation or an assessment of a contract financial penalty.  If you believe you were wrongfully not assigned a course you previously taught, you need to consider filing a grievance.  With a grievance filed, the matter will be investigated and the Union will make a determination if a contract violation should be claimed.  For a grievance to be timely under the contract, you must file your grievance within twenty (20) working days from the first awareness of the violation.  Failure to timely file will result in a waiver of the claim.  Please do not delay in taking action.

Additionally, if your course load has been reduced.  Pay careful attention to this clause from our contract: Adjunct faculty members will be entitled to a one (1) time payment of up to six (6) credits per academic year if they: (a) taught a minimum of six (6) credits per semester for the past eight (8) consecutive semesters (Fall and Spring only); and (b) received a rating of 4.0 or higher in three (3) of the last four (4) years; and (c) was assigned at least three (3) credits less than the average number of credits taught in the prior eight (8) semesters (Fall and Spring only); and (d) applies in writing for such payment to the Executive Director of Employee and Labor Relations (or their designee) by the applicable deadline (November 1 in the Fall and April 1 in the Spring). The University will, upon request, provide information necessary for adjunct faculty to make a determination whether they have satisfied the eligibility requirements.
